Natural gemstones for Gilgit, Hunza and Nagar, sent the full length of the country from Karachi by insured courier, with Cash on Delivery.
Gilgit is the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, sitting where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers meet beneath some of the highest mountains on earth. The Karakoram Highway runs through it, joining the region to the rest of Pakistan in the south and carrying on north through Hunza towards China. It is also one of the country's most important gem regions. The Hunza valley is known for ruby in marble and for spinel, and the pegmatites of Gilgit-Baltistan yield aquamarine, topaz, tourmaline and garnet admired around the world. Our Gilgit-Baltistan gemstones page tells that story in more detail. Authentic Gems is an online store based in Karachi; we have no shop in Gilgit, but we deliver natural stones there with Cash on Delivery.
A region that knows its stones
Many families in Gilgit and Hunza know stones far better than buyers down in the plains, because rough has been dug, traded and carried down these valleys for generations. Hunza ruby is usually pinkish red, often slightly cloudy or included, and sits in white marble; clean, deep red pieces are rare. Aquamarine and topaz come mainly from the high pegmatite areas, Shigar near Skardu among them. When you buy a cut stone, though, honest description matters more than the source: what it is, whether it has been treated, and what it weighs.
What Gilgit buyers ask for
- Ruby: local pride makes yaqoot a popular pick, whether Hunza material or stones from elsewhere.
- Aquamarine (beruj): light blue, durable and a favourite gift.
- Topaz and tourmaline: colourful pegmatite stones for rings and pendants.
- Peridot: from Kohistan, further down the highway.
- Aqeeq and feroza: everyday ring stones, often chosen for tradition.
Any belief tied to a stone is a tradition, not a promise, and for religious questions please ask a scholar you trust.
Checking a stone in Gilgit
Gilgit's bazaar has stone shops selling rough, specimens and cut stones, and tourists buy there every summer. The quality is real, and so are the tricks:
- Rough is not a finished stone. A crystal can look superb and still cut down to a small clean gem. Ask what it would yield.
- Watch for heated or irradiated colour. Strong blue topaz is almost always treated. That's fine when it is declared.
- Check ruby for glass filling. Under a torch, look for flattened bubbles or a glassy flash in the fractures. See how to identify original ruby.
- Confirm the weight unit. The gem ratti is 0.91 carat; the sunari ratti about 0.61 carat. Our carat to ratti converter helps.
Delivery to Gilgit and nearby areas
Gilgit is about as far from Karachi as a parcel can go in Pakistan. After confirmation, your order leaves Karachi within 1 working day, and the insured, tracked courier normally delivers in up to about 7 working days. We cover Gilgit city, Jutial, Danyore and Konodas, and on to Hunza (Aliabad and Karimabad), Nagar, Jaglot and Ghizer wherever couriers reach. Landslides or snow on the Karakoram Highway can hold parcels up for a few days, and we will let you know if that happens. Delivery is a flat Rs. 500 per order; see our shipping policy, and the delivery page for packing and tracking.
Cash on Delivery and inspection
You pay in cash when the parcel arrives. Open it in front of the rider, compare the stone with its listing photos, and pay only if it is right. Each listing at Authentic Gems is one stone, photographed and priced on its own. For advice, send your budget on WhatsApp.
Certificates and returns
All stones are natural, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged; see the authenticity page. Unused stones can be returned within 7 days of delivery under the return policy.
Wearing a stone in the cold
Gilgit winters are cold and dry, and sudden temperature changes can stress some stones. Don't take an opal or an emerald straight from a freezing street to a hot stove, and remove rings before heavy outdoor work. Hard stones such as ruby, sapphire, topaz and aquamarine cope well with daily wear. The topaz care guide explains why even a hard stone can chip along a cleavage plane.

Courier time to Gilgit
We send Gilgit orders from Karachi by insured courier. Gilgit-Baltistan is outside the next-day networks: parcels go up the Karakoram Highway by road, or by air when flights run, so allow about 7 working days. Snow, landslides or cancelled flights can add a day or two; your tracking number shows where the parcel is.
